Substantial EU funding for the ARCAD project

The Montpellier Scientific Community (Cirad, Inra, IRD, Montpellier SupAgro and Agropolis Fondation) has just been given 3.5 million Euros from Europe for its ARCAD project (Agropolis Resource Center for Crop Conservation, Adaptation and Diversity). This EU funding will enable the development of necessary technological platforms for the analysis and the conservation of plant biological resources, including the creation of a DNA bank. It will also contribute to the creation of twelve jobs estimated by 2015.
At the core of world issues, the aim of ARCAD is to become an international reference dedicated to genetic resources of cultivated Mediterranean and tropical plants. As a matter of fact, this infrastructure will enable research development on crop diversity and their adaptive capacity to respond to big challenges such as climate change, water scarcity, food security and energy issue, etc. In Montpellier, nearly a hundred researchers, teachers and technical staff are involved in the development of this project which is based on multiple resources: biological (conservation activities), technological (invention, use of innovations, development of methods), scientific (development of methods and knowledge) and educational (training activities and transmission of scientific culture).
In addition to the European involvement, research organisations and Languedoc-Roussillon region are funding the building of ARCAD, beginning in 2015 and due to finish during 2016. With an area of 2,500 m², the building will regroup functions of conservation and the analysis of genetic resources (seed and DNA bank, a cryobank, seed phenotyping, DNA extraction chain and genotyping, information system) as well as research and training activities.
