The role of the EP for the future of development cooperation

The Socialists & Democrats group in the European Parliament (EP) hosted this week a major debate on the Future of EU Development Cooperation policy. In its intervention, devoted to the success of the EU Development Cooperation and the role of the EP, SOLIDAR highlighted 3 areas where the EP gave a strong contribution: 1) Policy coherence for development: no policies in other fields should undermine the development possibility of the most excluded and marginalized people. This is a prerequisite for effective and sustainable development. 2) The EP support to the financial transaction tax (FTT): the 2012 Podimata report pushed strongly in this direction. Today 11 Member States have agreed on a FTT. Part of these funds should be allocated to sustainable development. 3) The fight against the differentiation principle: all income groups of countries have seen an increase in inequality. Indeed, the Middle Income Countries (MICs) are home to about 75 per cent of world poor. The EP defended the cooperation with MICs.
