MEPs pressure Commission for better meat origin labelling

Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) strongly oppose the European Commission (EC) on the meat origin labeling of ready meals. On Thursday 10 October, they have sent a open letter to Health Commissioner Tonio Borg asking the Commission to impose better meat origin on lasagnas and other types of frozen dishes, eight months after the horsemeat scandal. Yet the European Comission position remains unclear.
The Commission is expected to publish soon a report outlining the direction to take about the labeling of ready meals.However, Agnes Le Brun, a French MEP in the centre-right European People's Party group, warned that despite reassurances from Borg, the report “is about to bury the possibility of mentioning the origin of meat in prepared dishes,”She added that  “it seems that the Commission is trying to justify this move by telling us that the consumers are more interested in the price than the origin of their meat”.
MEPs hope that a better labeling for a food's origin will allow the consumers to be better informed, especially for low cost products. The EC responded that  it would consult the member states and the Parliament before making changes to labeling regulations. However it has not given a clear position on this issue since the horsemeat scandal broke out at the beginning of 2013.
