SHARE: An EU programme to improve food security in the Horn of Africa

The EU will allocate €250 million (329 million U.S. dollars) to improve food security and disaster preparedness in the Horn of Africa. Known as SHARE (Supporting the Horn of Africa’s Resilience), the aid programme will help communities in the region to recover faster from drought and other natural disasters, through supporting nutrition, sanitation and water programs.
Discussions on the program were launched in the course of a  high-level EU conference in Copenhagen last week, where Georgieva unveiled the initiative to member countries, as well as partners such as the World Bank, African Development Bank, World Food Program, and UNHCR, the UN refugee agency.
Georgieva, EU Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid, underlined the EU still faces a challenge in bridging the gap between relief and development cooperation. Likewise, Christian Friis Bach, Danish Minister for Development Cooperation, who attended the conference,  said that with this initiative they want to make sure the people in the Horn of Africa, “do not fall back into despair."
