EU deepening commitment to stabilising Somalia

Following the visit of the with the Prime Minister of the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia, Abdiweli Mohamed Ali, the President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, announced this week that the EU stands ready to provide additional support to the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM). The announcement has come, as CTA Brussels was informing previously, of an international conference on the future of Somalia, to take place in London and on the subject of a UN Security Council endorsement of a strengthened AMISOM, a core issue of the last ACP ambassadors meeting.
Both Catherine Ashton and Andris Piebalgs, High Representative and EU Commissioner for Development respectively, will attend the conference to reaffirm the EU’s commitment to stabilizing Somalia. The EU will therefore contribute to the proposed increase in active troop strength in the African Union-led Mission in Somalia (AMISOM)
President Barroso stated accordingly: "Today, we understand there is a need for an increased number of troops to help secure the country. Ahead of the London Conference, I am happy to say that the EU stands ready to mobilise additional resources to enable an increase in the number of troops, pending a decision of the UN Security Council. Our effort will be substantial but will only cover part of the increased needs so I call on other donors and the international community to step up their assistance."
