2014-2020 Budget proposals: Strengthening EU external action

The budget proposals for the EU external instruments have been recently adopted by the European Commission. These, which will allow the Union to meet its responsibility as global actor, will notably support developing countries. The total amount proposed is €96,249.4 million.

According to Catherine Ashton, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the Commission, "even in times of crisis, Europe must look outwards and engage in the world […] The EU will stand by its international commitments to the poorest and most vulnerable people […]"

Likewise, Andris Piebalgs, European Commissioner for Development, stresses that "the EU is the first donor in the world”  and “most Europeans agree that the EU should show solidarity by increasing its development aid”. For the period 2014-2020 the total amount proposed for the nine instruments issued is €96,249.4 million from which 34,276 million will be allocated to the European Development Fund (EDF, outside EU Budget).
