Nigeria's assembly seeks EU support on Ogoniland

Rivers State House of Assembly has appealed to the European Union (EU) to assist the state in cleaning up Ogoniland as recommended by the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) report recently submitted to the Federal Government.

Deputy Speaker of the Assembly, Leyii Kwanee, said in Port Harcourt while receiving the EU Ambassador to Nigeria, Dr. David Macrae, that the extent of damage to the area was enormous and required external assistance. "To me, personally, the Ogoniland is a disaster area and should be so declared," he said.

Kwanee pointed out that the state required the support of the EU on how Ogoniland could be repaired "because the quantum of financial implication of repairing the environmental disaster visited on the area is beyond the capability of the federal and state governments."
