Indian Ocean: tuna tagging programme

This programme is a follow-up to previous sustainable tuna fishery management projects already financed since the 5th EDF.  With a total budget of 14 million Euro, it the most ambitious tuna tagging scheme in the world. It aims to improve scientific knowledge of the state of tuna stocks and tuna exploitation rates in the Indian Ocean region. 168,000 tuna were tagged during the first phase of capture, tagging and release in October 2008. Tag recovery is proceeding well - 30,000 tags had been collected by October 2008. The minimum number of tags required to use the tuna monitoring and management bioinformatics models operated by the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) - one of the scientific partners in the programme - is expected to be reached shortly.
