Belgium honours former Haitian Prime Minister Michèle Pierre-Louis

H.E. Patrick Van Gheel, Ambassador of Belgium to Cuba, Haiti and the Dominican Republic, awarded Michèle Pierre-Louis the decoration of Officer of the Order of Leopold at a reception held on Monday 11 June 2018 at the Consulate of Belgium in Port-au-Prince. The ceremony was attended by Pascale Delcomminette, CEO of Wallonia Brussels International (WBI). The title was conferred on Mrs Pierre-Louis, President of the Foundation for Knowledge and Liberty (FOKAL), by His Majesty King Philippe of Belgium by Royal Decree on 8 May 2018. “Belgium has decided to honour Mrs Pierre-Louis for her outstanding service to Haiti’s development, and in particular for her contribution to culture, education, civil society strengthening and women’s rights,” said H.E. Mr Van Gheel when awarding the medal and certificate. His words also featured in the Embassy’s official communiqué. “I’m extremely moved, and surprised, to receive this honour from Belgium in front of my family and my colleagues from FOKAL,” said Mrs Pierre-Louis after the ceremony. “I was delighted when I heard that the embassy had put my name forward to the King of Belgium for this distinguished title.” She broke the news to FOKAL colleagues on Monday afternoon, writing: “This honour is very much recognition for you and the work we do together”.
