Unilever , Agric Ministry to explore opportunities in agro-processing

Unilever Ghana is teaming up with the Ministry for Food and Agriculture to commence activities in agro-processing. Products such as shea nuts, cashew and oil palm are among crops that would be considered in this initiative. Activities will span from the Northern part of Ghana to the forest areas and the southern savannah areas. Speaking at a roundtable meeting between officials of the consumer giant and the minister for food and agriculture, the Global CEO of Unilever, Paul Polman said the collaboration would go a long way to contribute to economic growth. “It’s a pleasure to be able to discuss with the minister the possibility we have to extend our footprints by adding more value to our products in Ghana and perhaps even export some of our products. Through this we will continually contribute to the economic growth of the economy,” Mr Polman said. The partnership will see both Unilever and the Agric ministry collaborate in developing products using a range of food products from farmers. Unilever already plays in the food-processing sector with the blue band margarine brand and the Lipton beverage. With this move toward agro-processing, the consumer giant looks to produce more products that are nutritious for its consumers. The minister for food and agriculture, Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto said venturing into agro-processing was a welcome news for agriculture in Ghana.
