Trinidad and Tobago: Ministry partners with EU to develop energy plan

The Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries has partnered with the European Union in the development of a sustainable energy implementation plan for Trinidad and Tobago. The plan was prepared by the EU Technical Assistance Facility and presented to parliamentary secretary Nicole Olivierre yesterday during a ceremony at the International Waterfront Centre, Port of Spain. Olivierre said the plan was a significant milestone that provides a workable solution to transitioning the country’s fossil fuel-based energy system to one that is diversified and sustainable. “In light of the many changes in the local and international energy sphere, we are obligated to take appropriate steps to transition our energy systems,” she said. “This roadmap is indicative of our intentions which will assist us in enabling the realisation of our very ambitious goals. The Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries continues to engage in initiatives aimed at creating an enabling environment for the deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency and energy conservation in T&T.” Deputy permanent secretary Penelope Bradshaw-Niles said the plan outlined short- and long-term measures to be implemented to achieve the ministry’s target of 15 per cent greenhouse gas emissions reductions by 2030 and ten per cent renewable energy power generation by 2021.
