Namibia: N$14 million from 11th EDF to operate abattoirs

The ministry of agriculture yesterday announced new operators and management for the Oshakati and Katima Mulilo abattoirs. “The cost of operating the abattoirs will be N$8 million for Oshakati and N$6 million for Katima Mulilo,” agriculture permanent secretary Percy Misika said in Windhoek yesterday. The abattoirs will be operational by the end of October, and they will be funded by the European Development Fund 11 (EDF). Paully Ipinge, chief executive officer of the Oshakati Elolo Abattoir will be in charge of the Oshakati facility while Chilinda Alfred, chairperson of the Zambezi Meat Corporation (Zamco) will be operating the Katima Mulilo abattoir. Oshakati abattoir spokesperson Sikunawa Negumbo said they aim to assist the farmers who have not been selling their livestock to realise maximum returns. “Most people in the northern regions rely on animal production to make a living. It is going to be a financial challenge because the facilities have not been used for over three years, but we are grateful to the ministry for this opportunity”, Iipinge said.
