Successful EU-Caribbean Sustainable Energy Conference

The EU-Caribbean Sustainable Energy Conference, a joint event between the EU and CARIFORUM, held on 10/11 October in Barbados, was a remarkable success. It brought together over 300 participants, including eight Prime Ministers and Ministers, from more than 50 countries. The conference reflects the commitment of the EU to support the Caribbean to achieve their part of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).The Conference resulted in the signature and announcement of several agreements: a Joint declaration between the EU, the European Investment Bank (EIB) and CARIFORUM on reinforced cooperation in the field of sustainable energy; an EU contribution to the Caribbean Investment Facility for 2016 (€30 million); the signature of the European Commission/EIB agreement for the implementation of the Energy Distribution Loss Reduction Programme in the Dominican Republic (€9.3 million), and the EU Support programme on sustainable energy to Barbados (€3 million). It was also announced that the EU Support programme on technical assistance for sustainable energy in the Caribbean (€9.2 million) would be signed shortly.
