Swaziland: EU injects E447 million for EPAs implementation

Negotiations for the Southern African Development Community (SADC) preferential trade agreements with the European Union (EU) have been completed. What is left now is for the Swaziland government to sign and ratify the agreement before October 2016. Speaking during a press conference held at the EU offices in Mbabane, EU Head of Delegation Gijis Berends said under the agreement the EU would liberalise 9 600 goods in a wide range of industries and sectors within the Swazi economy. “The EU will provide over E447 million in financial aid to help implement the EPAs on the ground,” he added. Berends said the EU would also establish an investment portal so that investors, consumers, retailers and all other stakeholders would be able to access information on this preferential trade agreement. On the same note, EU Ambassador Nicola Bellomo said they had just completed a workshop for stakeholders including government department heads, private sector representatives and members of civil society.
