Comesa Launches Guide for Regional Maize Trade

Maize trade within Comesa states is set to improve after member countries agreed to harmonise standards and regulations on quality to ease importation and exportation. The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa Mutual Recognition Framework was launched in Kampala, Uganda on Thursday to streamline analytical results and recognition of certificates of analysis issued by the laboratories of the participating countries. This will eliminate the need for multiple testing by both the exporting and importing country. The deal involves six countries with significant maize trade which are Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe."Comesa secretariat initiated the framework in recognition of the fact that regulatory barriers are sometimes a result of varied technical capacities in the public and private sector entities across the region," said the director of agriculture and industry in COMESA, Thierry Kalonji. The trade barriers on grains within the block have led to a growth in the informal trade which currently accounts for 80 per cent of the market.
