COMESA disburses €62 million

The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), in partnership with the European Union (EU), has disbursed €62 million under the Regional Integration Support Mechanism (RISM) programme in the last four years. RISM is a COMESA-EU   funded   programme which provides budget and project support to member states in addition to the technical co-operation facility under European Development Fund. Speaking during the official opening of the 35th meeting of COMESA inter-governmental committee yesterday, Deputy Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry Raymond Mpundu said the programme has enabled member states to implement their regional obligations by addressing some of the challenges that hinder intra-regional trade such as supply side constraints and non-tariff barriers. Mr Mpundu said the COMESA industrial policy, which has been finalised, holds the key to unlocking the trade potential through harnessing of value addition. COMESA secretary-general Sindiso Ngwenya informed the meeting that the total support to member states under RISM and the technical co-operation facility for this year is €12 million. “This brings the total disbursement from 2012 to 2015 to €62 million,” he said.
