EU farmers demand agri marketing fund for exports

While agriculture ministers from the EU’s member states met in Brussels this week, more than 5,000 farmers took to the streets of Brussels to protest about falling dairy and meat prices. In response to the crisis EU farmers are facing, they have made some specific demands aimed at boosting exports, including the establishment of a fund directed at marketing agricultural products outside the EU, as well as a mechanism to stabilise the price of milk and pork. Additional demands include early direct payments to help farmers with their liquidity problems; a review of the intervention price at which farmers can sell their stock to the EU; and some are even calling for the introduction of temporary milk quotas to reduce supply and bring up prices. The European Commission announced a comprehensive support package worth €500 million, but it is not yet clear on how this will be divided.
