Namibia poultry import restrictions from SADC countries

The Namibian government is continuing to fight a legal challenge against its decision to restrict South African chicken imports. Namibian Trade and Industry Minister Calle Schlettwein recently took measures to restrict the country’s monthly chicken imports from South Africa. The South African Poultry Asssociation have legally challenged the restrictions, claiming that they are against World Trade Organisation (WTO) rues, as well as the South African Development Community (SDAC) Treaty, and the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) agreement. However, there are concerns about cartels and the abuse of dominance due to anti-competitive practices of South African businesses.
