EU-Pacific sign bilateral & regional deals

At the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly, European Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development, Neven Mimica held bilateral meetings with the Fijian Prime Minister Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International cooperation, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola and other government representatives. They signed new partnership programme, of a total of €28 million which will guide EU development cooperation with Fiji until 2020. The government of Fiji has identified the agriculture, sugar (with an emphaisis on sustainability and competivity) and justice sector (especially in relation to tackling poverty) as the main areas for support under the 11th European Development Fund. The region shall receive additional support of €166 million for three priority areas, namely regional economic integration; sustainable management of natural resources, environment and management of waste; as well as inclusive and accountable governance and the respect of Human Rights.
