EU remains committed to Pacific EPA

Despite having started negotiations for an Economic Partnership Agreement in 2004, a recent EU review and statement from the EU Commissioner for trade Commissioner Malmström reaffirms that the EU is commited to complete the EPA with the Pacific. Disagreements between the two regions are related to the EU positions on proper fisheries governance and the sustainable management of Pacific fishery resources. Bearing in mind Pacific States’ sensitivities on fisheries and Pacific plans to review fisheries resources management in the region, EU Trade Commissioner Malmström has suggested to (i) wait for the outcome of that review and (ii) to return to the would-be comprehensive regional EPA in three years’ time. The three-year period time span corresponds to the same time frame of the Pacific region review.
