A helping hand for Zimbabwe

The European Union is planning to grant 3 million euros to the Zimbabwe private sector to support its exports. Brussels has also announced the suspension of sanctions, except those applied to President Mugabe and his wife.
The ZANU-PF, Robert Mugabe’s party, maintains that the sactions applied to Zimbabwe since 2002 were unjustified.
The 3 million euro EU grant should help in the application of the Economic Partnership Agreement signed between Brussels and the ACP countries, an agreement ratified so far by Zimbabwe, Madagascar, Mauritius and the Seychelles. The European Union ambassador to Zimbabwe, Aldo Dell'Ariccia, explains the purpose of this aid:
"The aim is to promote Zimbabwe’s small and medium enterprises so that they can enjoy all the advantages of the Agreement, which allows these nations to export all their produce into the European Union without having to pay customs duties..."
