Liebherr to deliver Caribbean’s biggest mobile harbour crane

Germany-based equipment manufacturer Liebherr Maritime Crane has announced the delivery of its LHM 600 mobile harbour crane (MHC) to the Port of Kingston, Jamaica. The new crane, which is claimed to be the biggest crane operated in the Caribbean, is starting operations this month at Kingston Wharves Limited’s multipurpose terminal at the port. The Port of Kingston already operates Liebherr’s smaller LHM 550 high rise version, which the company claimed in a statement is the former biggest MHC operated in the region. The new crane, which is expected to facilitate the terminal’s handling of big container vessels up to super post-Panamax size, is equipped with a 12 m tower extension claimed to enhance safety due to the higher position of the tower cabin of 37 m. The new unit, which features a maximum outreach of 58 m, twin lift capability and a 104 tonnes lifting capacity, is able to operate vessels up to 19 container rows wide and 9 container stacks high. Grantley Stephenson, Kingston Wharves Limited’s CEO, said that the new crane is expected to maximise the terminal’s efficiency and increase its responsiveness. “This new machine is the next essential future investment in our terminal in order to handle the new generation of vessels that are heading for us in the course of the Panama Canal expansion,” he added.
