Starting of the European External Action Service

The European External Action Service (EEAS), the union’s new diplomatic service, supporting the EU foreign policy chief Baroness Ashton, is due to start work. 1,525 officials will be transferred to the service from the European Commission and Council of Ministers, and there will be 100 news posts. After the start-up year, the annual budget is expected to be around 475 million euros.
